Caught In a Bad Romance

Posted in Complaints |

This is just an update that I finally added the caption contest and you can compete by clicking here.

So, last night I couldn’t sleep so I decided to surf YouTube for something interesting to watch. I decided that since I liked the song Paparazzi by Lady Gaga, I would finally see the video. I know, I’m way off in my timing.

Anyway, as I began to watch it my blood began to boil. I don’t know if her producers are aware of this, but there are young girls (10 year olds) who watch MTV and see the music videos they play. When you put an intense make-out/pre-sex scene in a music video that a ten year old can see whenever she wants on the television, I get a little freaking pissed off.

If you’ve never seen the video and or heard the song, I’ve posted the video below.

Now, is it just me or is that beginning make-out scene a little intense? I’m pretty sure he grabs her ass at one point. Please tell me if I’m going crazy but if I my children were watching this I’d be pretty pissed off. All in all, I think we should leave that shit out and set it aside for porn, not every day music videos. I mean, really, children do as they see because they don’t know any better. Yes, even 10 year olds. They don’t have minds of their own yet (well, some do) or opinions that are really that strong. Imagine, when they see shit like that on tv being done by an artist they idolize they’re going to think that’s how they should act. When really, no, we don’t need ten year olds making out. Come on now.

It’s not just that video. If any of you have seen the video for her other famous song, Love Game, one of her back up dancers strokes her crotch quite obviously while they’re dancing. It’s clear that it’s part of the dance routine and that’s what makes it even worse.

Don’t get me wrong, her videos are interesting and I never get bored when watching them; her songs are pretty catchy as well. I just think they need to cut back on the sex scenes and leave that for porn. I could be going crazy but I’m just saying, this shit drives me nuts.

Dear Kendra,

Dear Kendra,

Lady Gaga’s music videos should not be viewed by children. I think it will be too graphic for them to see. Although her music is fun to listen to, the music videos shall not be viewed by a younger audience.

I really like her videos though. I think they are interesting yet kind of freaky. Sometimes her videos really scare me…

Dear Kendra,

Our society’s living in a time where media is over-sexed, for a lack of a better term. It’s annoying, but the best parents/concerned people can do is monitor their kids and explain what’s acceptable to watch/not watch.

And actually, I recognize that actor she’s making out with in the beginning. He plays Eric in the vampire series, True Blood. One of my favorite TV shows, but most definitely NOT for kids (lots of nudity/sexual themes/violence).

Dear Kendra,

Haha wow, still such a cutie! If I can think of something then I’ll enter the competition haha. ;3

I hate that! I hate when people take advantage of my break to make me do something. :)

Yeah, they’re really weird sometimes. I had a dream when I was younger that these monsters were around me in a pond and then these big red bouncy balls were trying to drown me. :S

Thank you!

This is the first time I have seen the Paparazzi video even though I have heard the song many times. I have to agree though. That make-out scene was very intense, not to mention it was pretty much two minutes long! The clip tells a great story… but honestly, sometimes Lady Gaga has full-on scenes in her videos. It’s really inappropriate to have these sorts of scenes in videos that kids as young as 10 could be watching.

It’s definitely not just you – I also find this sort of thing inappropriate. They should at least cut the videos and create an “uncut” version.

Yes, he definitely grabs her ass, and it’s even shown as a close up. -_-

Dear Kendra,

you know.. I don’t think they show that beginning scene on MTV unless its the late night/early morning video hour or whatever.

Besides, what 10-year-old watches MTV? lol And what 10-year-old would stick around for a Gaga vid anyway? On top of that, the scene is much more artsy than pornographic. I think Lady Gaga has that scene to show the passion between the two characters… and blah, its art! hahaha

idk we all have our opinions. xP

Dear Kendra,

As much as I love Lady GaGa, her videos, and her songs, I agree that she has too much sexual content in her videos. In Just Dance she humps a blow-up animal floaty in the kiddie pool, and in Bad Romance, she shows her thong.

Dear Kendra,

I’ve never seen the video until now. And I must say, lady Gaga’s style is really…unique. I really don’t know if that’s the right word but yea. It’s not just the video, but also her whole personality, from the way she dresses to the rambunctious behavior. Sometimes she can be a little over the top and quite obscene. All I can say is that my younger sisters won’t be watching that anymore.

Haha woo. I can’t think of anything creative yet – everything I can think of is lame. XD I will enter when I think of something witty!

That’s so creepy. O_O I don’t really like creepy horrific dreams, lol.

Yeah, that’s very true. It’s such a good video, but it’s just inappropriate. It’s intense in a good way as it captures the whole idea, but no, no, not with those “young-ins” watching. U_U

Dear Kendra,

I think lady gaga likes attention lol, like everything she wears and stuff so i think it’s just the way she is. Even though it’s bad for little kids, she is still getting attention. Anyway hollywood is all about sex and lust and that stuff, so yea idk what to expect anymore. Anyway i do not know many 10 year olds who watch mtv lol

and yea i guess, i just kept thinking about it lol, liek you know, it’s just a thought at the moment lol

Oh I know. I mean nowadays it seems like it’s not a big deal, that whole sex-act-on-stage-thing. It sort of “blends in” with the dance and whole show.

I still like Lady Gaga though… and it’s not like most of her fans are kids anyway. But I agree with what you are saying because it is inappropriate for young kids, I just hope that when that video is playing on TV little kids are not watching it!

Dear Kendra,

I do admire Lady GaGa’s songs because each one of them has meaning. But I don’t really like her music videos much-they have too much sexual content! Younger children should not watch these. I don’t know why MTV airs these videos. (I don’t watch MTV).

Haha, I live in Australia and if I “need” to watch MTV, I’d have to get Foxtel.
Oh and thanks! I still don’t know whether to see it or not….but even if I want to, I think the cinemas doesn’t show Avatar anymore because I’m so late!! Haha, maybe I’ll wait for it to come on DVD. :)

Dear Kendra,

I love Lady Gaga. I don’t get why so many people dislike her just because of her style. I think it is very unique. (this does not go towards you in anyway, i’m just generalizing).

I wouldn’t want my children watching this either. It’s pretty inappropriate.

Dear Kendra,

Honestly, Lady GaGa & Britney Spears, celebrities that sing about sex & in GaGa’s case, a man’s “disco stick” = OBVIOUSLY not suitable for children. But I honestly don’t see anything wrong with it. Yes it’s inappropriate for 10 year olds but it’s not for 10 year olds. It’s not the industry’s problem that 10 year olds watch make-out scenes. It’s not nearly close to soft-core porn or anything. Parents are the ones that should be making sure their 10 year olds are watching Sesame Street instead of MTV. That’s why you can put parental controls on almost anything.

MTV isn’t for young children & sure they watch it but it’s not MTV’s fault or Lady Gaga’s fault or anyone who produces her barely clad videos. She’s obviously the new sex symbol & you can’t expect the producers to tell her to put some clothes on for her younger fans. She doesn’t asked to be looked up to, she’s practically allergic to pants.

I can tell you that the content of these videos relates to how sexual the song is. Knowing that it’s LG you should expect tons of sexual content. It’s pretty obvious, don’t you think? Kids shouldn’t be listening to her anyway. They should be watching Blue Clues or something on the Disney channel. They have those channels for a reason. MTV is catered to high schoolers & shows like The Real World, have a lot of drama focused around sex.

Trust me, the FCC is very strict on regular local channels like the CW or Fox. When it comes to cable channels that people pay for, there is more leeway. Have you seen an HBO show? Because you have to pay for it, most of the shows like True Blood or Sex & The City contain a lot of sexual content. Boobs & soft-core porn sex scenes.

I don’t think you should get too worked up over it & just take it how it is. If you find that the videos are too raunchy for you, just don’t watch them & shield the young ones from watching them.

Dear Kendra,

Lady Gaga’s songs can really hyped you up, that’s for sure. But I agree with you about the music videos. I can’t even watch the music videos if my MOM is in the same room! She’s going to be telling me about how bad it is and stuff. GAHH, I don’t know what they’re thinking about when they made her music videos.

Oh yeah, sorry I haven’t replied. I was stuck racking my brains for the exams. Don’t worry, I have extended your advertising period.

Dear Kendra,

But I mean, that’s just my opinion of course. You have your own. I just see it this way: you shouldn’t be worried about the kids when you’re watching a show for adults just like you wouldn’t be worried about teenagers being bored when they watch Blue’s Clues. Certain things are just made for different age groups.

Dear Kendra,

The video is really weird, and very intimate.
But I don’t think she really understands the viewers she has, all she’s really trying to achieve is artistic views in her videos.
I agree though, she shouldn’t be making things so sexual when it’s getting viewed all over the world…

Dear Kendra,

Hahah I’ve watched the Paprazzi music video before. It is kind of disturbing in the beginning. That first scene takes up like half the video, then the music actually starts. It’s really weird. Lady Gaga is just into those things I guess..but those parts aren’t pleasurable to most people

Haha in Love Game, at one part, she’s kissing a GIRL! I never noticed it until my sister was like “SHE’S KISSING A GIRL?” And I told her no, but then we watched it again and we were like “OH GOD, SHE IS…” Haha Lady Gaga is definitely..unique XD . Me and my sister agree that she loves to wear, barley any clothes LOL. But I do like her music, just not the videos as much xP

Dear Kendra,

I agree with your blog, but I also think it is the parents responsibility to monitor what their kids are watching and if MTV is showing those videos; then make sure their kids aren’t watching MTV. Lady GaGa obviously wants the wrong kind of attention, and she gets it, and is making lots of money…I don’t think she’s going to stop any time soon. While she is unique, I wouldn’t go as far to call it art… :/

They go a bittt too intimate in the make-out scenes. :/ It doesn’t set a good example, but at the same time, should 10 year olds be watching MTV? Probably not. :P

Dear Kendra,

Well, that’s terrible marketing for you. It certainly isn’t a good thing for children to be seeing such scenes, however, people in the business are desperate whereas artists might have been partially brainwashed in such a way that they begin to think it’s all right to produce obscene music videos, after all it’s their style and keeping them from doing so would be equal to taking away their freedom of expression. For now, however, the only thing we could do as elders would be to EXPLAIN to children whatever it is they’re seeing (I don’t believe in keeping them from watching; doing so would only heighten their interest) and let them know what producers and artists truly mean by these.

Dear Kendra,

I think Lady Gaga’s are particularly bad in that respect. Interesting, but a lot of sexual content. In MTV’s defense (not that I like MTV) 10 year olds are not their demographic. Of course they still watch that channel, but that is not who they are trying to appeal too. I feel like its the same with shows like CSI. There is some pretty graphic stuff on shows like that. No one seems to complain about violence.

I agree however, I would not want my child watching these kinds of videos.

Dear Kendra,

Insanity. like I said before, what kid watches MTV? lol There are worse things to worry about with kids though. I mean, let’s hope that they CAN tell the difference between a music video and actual adult videos.

And yea, everything is sexed up these days, but I guess it’s up to parents to monitor what their kids watch. Of course there’s no way I would just up and show my (future) kids the beginning scene of Paparazzi, but if they happen to see it on their own, what can be done? As long as the parents have spoken to the kids about sex and the like, there shouldn’t be much of an issue concerning how the kids are effected.

I do agree with you, the whole video of Paparazzi could traumatize any kid who watches it. Because not only is it the start, but the suicides it involves…

I like her songs and I think she’s unique and a great, but she’s goes a little far with her flim clips and sometimes they’re just creepy.

Oh, I know, the stuff put out there for kids to see is crazy. I mean, really, no 10 year old wants to see that. Much less hear the song lyrics from Love Game.

Lady Gaga is definitely a good performer and her songs are catchy, but you’re right, she could tone down her videos a bit on the whole sex deal.
